My Trip To Sinhagad Fort : Where History Meets Adventure & Flavor

Back in 2018, me and my 3 friends decided to go on a trek to Sinhagad Fort, one of the most historic sites in Pune and a favorite weekend destination among Punekars. Located on the southwestern end of Pune, this fort carries a rich history, having experienced many battles. The most talked-about battle took place by the legendary warrior of the Marathas, Tanaji Malusare. Earlier known as ‘Kondana’ after the sage Kaundinya, it was later renamed by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj after reclaiming it following the Treaty of Purandar.

For those who appreciate history and nature, a visit to Sinhagad Fort is nothing less than perfect. Situated about 35 kilometers from Pune, the fort is at an altitude of 1,312 meters. The best way to experience this journey is to begin the trek before sunrise, as it takes about two to three hours to reach the top. Upon arrival, a quintessential Maharashtrian breakfast awaits, featuring crispy Kanda Bhaji, flavorful Wada Pav, and warm Kaande Pohe—a true delight after an early morning trek. To avoid the rush, it’s best to start descending by 4 PM.

What to See at Sinhagad Fort

  • The views from the top are breathtakingly scenic. Throngs of visitors are privy to a panoramic, 360-degree view of Pune, and along the way, treat themselves to some magnificently beautiful sights, including those of the Panshet, Khadakwasla, and Varasgaon dams, as well as that majestic Torna Fort in the distance. Clearly, because of this height, photography enthusiasts take so many snaps that they probably run out of memory when they leave.

These are a few highlight points for you in case you intend visiting:

  • Kalyan Darwaza and Pune Darwaza: Majestic entrances constructed using traditional Maratha architectural techniques reflect the rich historical past of this fort.
  • Dev Take: The natural source of sweet fresh water is present here.
  • Tanaji Malusare Memorial: A memory in the respect of the general, who never wanted to withdraw their heads at all.
  • Historical Ruins: The weathered remains tell a story of the past of this fort, an unspoken and powerful reminder of its historical past.

A Culinary Delight at the Summit

Along with its rich heritage value, Sinhagad Fort is celebrated for the Maharashtrian delicacies available. Savouring mouth-freshening food, against a refreshing breeze sweeping up through mountains is perhaps unrivaled in any form of food destination. There are huts manned by villagers selling authentic and locally-prepared meals in this site like:

Jhunka-Bhakari: Crude pairing of jowar roti and a dollop of spicy besan mixed in and finished with hot red chilli chutney called ‘Thecha’.

Kanda Bhaji: Crunchy onion fritters are best enjoyed with hot cups of tea.

Gavran Chicken: This spicy, homely preparation of country-style chicken is ready for those who seek the non-vegetarian variety.

Matka Dahi & Buttermilk: Thick and creamy curd and buttermilk, prepared by local villagers.

Corn Cobs & Raw Mangoes: Crunchy roasted corn and tangygreen mangoes, spiced with chili powder and salt and pepper, make for a very perfect mid-trek snack.

While the prices are a bit on the higher side, one cannot help but look at the sheer effort it takes for the locals to carry food supplies up the fort, often trekking the same rugged paths every day to earn a livelihood.

Best Time to Visit

The best season for visiting Sinhagad Fort is during the monsoon season when the entire landscape turns out to be a lush green paradise. While the natural beauty of the fort is merely enchanting with mist-covered hills, cool breeze, and loveliness all around, this is the experience which is equally rewarding both in case you go driving up to it or opt for the trekking route. The place is also well kept with a clean environment and has a free public toilet for tourists convenience.

Conclusion

Sinhagad Fort is more than a trek; it is a walk through history, an ode to Maratha bravery, and a celebration of local flavors. The combination of stunning landscapes, historic ruins, and delicious food makes it a must-visit spot for anyone exploring Pune. Whether you’re a history buff, a trekking enthusiast, or a foodie, this fort offers an experience that stays with you long after you’ve left its majestic heights.
